CIVIC
Community-centred Infrastructures for Visible and Inclusive Cities — Neighbourhood Evidence Observation Network
About the project
CIVIC is a community road safety research project based in London, Ontario. We have deployed a network of Telraam AI-assisted traffic sensors at 16 sites in a residential neighbourhood, hosted by volunteer residents who have agreed to mount a small device on their window or façade facing the street. Each sensor continuously counts and classifies pedestrians, cyclists, cars, and heavy vehicles — generating the kind of granular, long-term data that currently does not exist for these streets.
The project is led by Dr. Carrie Mitchell at the University of Waterloo's CORE Planning Lab, with support from the Global Futures Fund — PSI, and in partnership with Mobycon (Ottawa), the City of Wolfville, and Acadia University.

The data
All data collected by CIVIC is open and freely available. We publish weekly data packages by site, including pedestrian counts, cyclist counts, vehicle counts, and uptime statistics. Data is available in CSV and GeoJSON formats.
Data updated weekly. For live access or API queries, contact us.
Our community hosts
CIVIC would not exist without the 16 London residents who agreed to host a sensor on their property. Hosting takes about 20 minutes to set up, requires only a power outlet and Wi-Fi connection, and can be ended at any time. Hosts retain the right to withdraw their data at any point.
